French-English Parallel Text, La surprise, Chapitre 4

Chapitre 4. L’apéritif

  5. Mais une mauvaise surprise l’attend.

Chapter 4. The Aperitif

  1. Sometimes, after work, Julien goes to a bar for an aperitif with his friends. The bar is five minutes’ walk from the office. Élise runs there, hoping to find her boyfriend.
  2. The bar is big and stylish and there are lots of people. Everybody is chatting and looking very relaxed.
  3. Élise looks around her: some older people are sitting at the tables on the terrace having a coffee or a tea and reading the newspaper. Inside, groups of young people are talking, drinking beer and eating crisps. Among them are some of Julien’s friends.
  4. “What luck!” thinks Élise, relieved. “Julien is sure to be here with them.”
  5. But an unpleasant surprise awaits her.
